Bochum is part of the region "Ruhrpott" (as the Germans call it) that was famous for its coal-mining and steel industry in previous decades. Heavy industry has largely gone and Bochum has experienced structural changes. Some industrial monuments are still left in this area and are restored in the form of museums and community centres.
If you have some spare time in Bochum a visit at the German Mining Museum (Deutsches Bergbau-Museum) may be a good choice. It is near the center of Bochum at the subway station "Deutsches Bergbau-Museum".
