When I asked for the memo, you wrote: ``I do not have such documentation as I am new to the position and was left with the interpretation in only note form from the prior Ethics Officer.'' I contacted the university lawyers. Donna Williamson responded: ``To my knowledge, the legal office has not had any involvement in determining who received these statements this year. This state law has been in effect for a long time. I am trying to track down what occurred.'' Meanwhile, I contacted the prior Ethics Officer, and he said that he gave all his records to you. If there was a memo, you should have it. Are you sure that the grant-PI rule actually comes from the lawyers? The actual state law doesn't include grant PIs. It sounds like there was some miscommunication from the prior Ethics Officer. Could you please fax a copy of his note to 312-996-1491, attention Bernstein? ---D. J. Bernstein, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science, University of Illinois at Chicago P.S. The Office of the Secretary of State says there's still time for ethics officers to file corrections to the list of names.
