Bernstein" To: nmaddox@ilsos.net Subject: economic-interest misapplication I'm a faculty member at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I'm one of many victims of an error by the University Ethics Officer: this year a huge number of faculty members, not just department heads, have been told to file Statements of Economic Interest. I wrote to the Office of the Secretary of State to find out our options in case this error is not corrected promptly by the University Ethics Officer. Renee Paine gave me your name. Suppose the Office of the Secretary of State is given a victim's name by the University Ethics Officer; does not receive a Statement of Economic Interest from the victim; and is informed by the victim that the victim is not required to file the statement. What happens? I presume that the Office of the Secretary of State doesn't blindly trust the University Ethics Officer. There must be some sort of friendly dispute-resolution mechanism. ---D. J.
